Summary

Vopak has been active for over 400 years under the motto ‘storing vital products with care’. With product streams changing, however, the company believes hydrogen is set to become one of the ‘vital products’ of the future.

The challenge ahead of Vopak is how to ship hydrogen to Rotterdam from other countries as well as store it in a safe and sustainable manner. As hydrogen is made up of small molecules, transporting it in its gas form is rather difficult. It is, however, possible, to ‘pack’ it in liquids consisting of larger molecules, which are known as Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC).

Scope TransitionHERO

TransitionHERO has supported Vopak in the development of a feasibility study for the packing, transport, storage and unpacking of hydrogen in LOHC using a new technology.

TransitionHERO was responsible for the following activities in the project:

  • Feasibility study
  • Business case development
  • Site selection studies and layouting
  • Optioneering to compare the different options, sizing and locations.
  • PFDs, , process simulations
  • Cost estimating
  • Permitting check
  • Project planning, risks and strategy
